No matter what age you are or stage of life you’re in, moving into a new house is a thrilling time. It can make you feel more successful and independent than almost anything else, especially if you’re in love with the home. The biggest problem comes when you’re trying to find that home that you know you’re going to fall in love with, which is why so many people are beginning to build their own.

If you’re planning on building your own home, you should know at the start of the project what kind of home you’d like to build. This will affect everything from the size of the land you buy to what materials your builder will use. To figure out what kind of dream home is right for you, think some important aspects through to determine exactly what your house should look like.

  1. Consider Your Needs

Why are you moving into a new house? Everyone has their reasons. It might be to have more space to expand your family, it may be to downsize to save money or it could be because you need a bigger garage to fit your family car and the lawnmower at the same time. Whatever it is, make a list of what you need from this new house. Then consider what this new house will need from you.

If you’re upgrading to have more space, you’ll need more things like appliances and furniture to make the space feel like a home. That’ll require extra money, which you’ll probably be lacking once you pay for the house to be built. Think of all the needs that will come along with your house and keep that list in front of you.

  1. Consider Your Wants

While the things you want aren’t as important as the things you need, you should still take them into consideration before you start planning out your new home. Do you think you’ll want a pool in the backyard in the future? An exercise room in the house? Your wants can be whatever you dream of, so write them down!

Next, cross off the wants that you know won’t happen and keep the things that might. You might be able to get that in ground pool, but installing a tennis court probably won’t happen. Talk with your builder after your list is complete to make sure you hire the right people. Working with people who can build what you need now while still providing for what might happen in the future will make the entire house building experience worth it in the end.

  1. Find A Middle Ground

Somewhere between your wants and your needs is a happy middle ground that’ll serve as your dream home. Work with your significant other or anyone else who might live in that home with you to make sure it works with everyone’s vision of what the home should be. The bring your builder in on the plan and work out the logistics to ensure that your dream home is possible with your budget.

  1. Match It to A Design

The interior design of your future home can wait until there’s a space to decorate. What you should focus on once you know what needs and wants your house is going to meet is how it’s going to look while doing that. Does your heart swoon over ranch houses or cape cod exteriors? Do you know the difference?

Take a minute to do some research into different exterior designs for homes. Keep a few pictures of your favorites, then show your builder. They already probably have a good idea of what style of home will match what you’re looking for, but if you find your heart set on a specific style, they can work with you to make that dream come true.

Finding the right design for your home is going to take more effort than simply looking up a few pictures or pinning what looks nice. The design of a home has to serve your needs for years to come, while looking great from the outside. It all depends on what you have going on in your life and what your design preferences are. Start making a list for yourself and you’ll find your dream home design in no time.
