Coffee cocktails can be so much more than a healthy dollop of Bailey’s in your mug (although I’m not knocking that at all). Did you know that citrus makes a great complement to a light roast? This drink is going to change the way you think about coffee. There are a couple of secrets to this – the first being that freshly ground beans have a brighter flavor that perfectly blends with the orange notes. The second key is, you guessed it, fresh squeezed orange juice. You can take shortcuts, I suppose, but do me a favor and try it this way the first time you make this. This cocktail would be fantastic with brunch, but I think it’s the perfect . . .
5 O’Clock Coffee Cocktail
- 1 oz. Grand Marnier
- 1 oz. dark rum
- 1 tbsp. simple syrup
- 1 tbsp. fresh squeezed orange juice
- 2 oz. brewed coffee, chilled
- Heavy cream
Combine Grand Marnier, rum, simple syrup, orange juice, and coffee in a mixer. Stir. Pour mixture into martini glass and top with heavy cream. Garnish with cinnamon and orange rind if desired. Cheers!
NOTE: The coffee I used comes from a monthly coffee sampler service I have found and fallen in love with called Misto Box. It’s only $9.99 a month, and it’s a great way to try quality coffee beans and have them delivered right to your door. And yes, I find it’s worth it to invest in a coffee grinder. They don’t cost much and are very useful.
