In the end only kindness matters 600px

Did you know that when you practice kindness, not only are you likely to make others happy, you are increasing your own sense of well-being as well? You probably do know that. It feels good to do good. When we’re kind to others, our orbitofrontal cortex zaps us with a shot of happy juice, the same as if something good happened directly to us. We humans are social, empathetic creatures, and we have the ability to vicariously enjoy the happiness of others. Pretty cool, huh?

Here’s another interesting development: researchers in Japan have found that being complimented actually improves work performance. People do better at tasks when you say nice things to them, it turns out. Talk about shaping the reality around you with kind words! According to Professor Norihiro Sadato, “To the brain, receiving a compliment is as much a social reward as being rewarded money. We’ve been able to find scientific proof that a person performs better when they receive a social reward after completing an exercise. There seems to be scientific validity behind the message ‘praise to encourage improvement’. Complimenting someone could become an easy and effective strategy to use in the classroom and during rehabilitation.”

The bottom line is, kindness is free and spreading it is a wonderful way to make your own life better. To that end, here are some printable compliments you can scatter like dandelion seeds of goodwill. Arise, go forth, and compliment!
