Movie Review | Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie

By Andy Dominic

Brought to us by the creators of Chicken Run, Shrek, and Mr. Peabody and Sherman (just to name a few of my favorite movies created by DreamWorks Animation) we’re given Captain Underpants the Epic first Movie!

This movie is absolutely for the kids. The majority of the humor did not appeal to me, but it did to the audience of kids, for the most part. I expect this movie to be second to Wonder Woman in box office this weekend, but overall, I would not be surprised if it eventually came close to being around the top 10 for the year. Why? Because animated movies have had great success in recent years due to the age of the viewers. Who’s being targeted? Kids. Who has to take those kids? Adults, whether it’s parents or even a sibling. Therefore, the theater auditorium is guaranteed to be filled.

I loved the animation in this movie. Easily the best part of it was the animation, in my opinion. They did a great job of turning a book, that is/was basically a comic book into a movie. Even better is how they still kept the feel of a comic. The director, Davin Soren, could not have done a better job of putting the scenes together. I loved the feel of the movie. The voiceovers done by Kevin Hart, Ed Helms, Thomas Middleditch, Jordan Peele, and Kristen Schaal were great. Once again, could not have been better.

The attention to detail in this movie was crazy. The makers really paid attention to the comics and brought to life Captain Underpants, George, Harold, Melvin, and Professor Poopypants. I left the movie theater very impressed and excited to see what’s to come in the future. As far as stand outs go, Nick Kroll’s voiceover as Professor Poopypants was the best. I loved his iteration of the character and hope that he returns in any of the future movies. I highly recommend this movie. I rate it a 9. I think it’ll become a kid favorite.

My name is Andy Dominic Hernandez IV. I typically go by Dominic. I hate when people spell my name Dominique or pronounce it like that. I am 18 and a sophomore in college. I have a younger brother and that’s about it. I’m a journalism major at UNT with hopes of being something in entertainment. I absolutely love movies and go at least once every weekend. I’m either listening to music or watching something on Netflix to post on my YouTube channel. You can contact me at dominataur@me.com.
