To kick off July’s Spotlight Series we’re taking a closer look at Luci, an inflatable, solar-powered light that’s changing lives. The team over at MOWERD sent me a Luci Color Essence to include in this month #TreatYoSelfTote and to give it a shot.
This is what it looks like by day:
You can see that there’s a small square solar panel that charges the little device. There’s a power button that controls the on and off function as well as which color you’d like to use.
And by night the magic happens. I chose the Mint color because it reminded me of our beloved Anxiety Blob. With the frosted material, the light is soothing and relaxing to have on. You can hit the button once and it will turn on and rotate through all eight colors, or hit the button again to choose between: Lavender, Violet, Sky, Powder, Mint, Lime, Coral, or Rose.
MPOWERD was founded in 2012 with the creation of Luci and a sustainable business model, because the plan was always to do more than just bring light to outdoor adventures. It was about bringing affordable, sustainable light to the 1.5 billion people living without electricity in developing countries. They use “high volume retail sales to lower costs, and pass those savings on.” With this model they are able to provide the light to anyone around the world no matter what their income or where they live.
Luci has won a number of awards including: 2013 CES Envisioneering | 2014 CES Innovation | 2014 Katerva Sustainability | 2015 INDEX: Design to Improve Life Finalist | 2017 Bright Minds Challenge Top 10 Finalist.
What I really enjoyed about it was that I could inflate it and use it at night and then simply deflate it and put it in my window to charge. This feature also means that it’s going to save space when you’re packing for a trip or even bringing it on a hike. And as light as it is, it is extremely durable and waterproof. It takes about 7 hours to fully charge and can last around 6 hours.
I loved the Color Essence version because of the frosted exterior, which gave it a spa feeling. But if you’re looking for a lightweight camping light you might want to check out the Luci 2.0. It has a clear exterior for maximum brightness.
