Netflix, it owns you, it owns me. Yes, Netflix, I am still watching Jessica Jones. OK, garsh! My favorite idea of a crazy Friday night is wine, popcorn and of course Netflix. Holidays don’t change that. I would much rather be cuddled up watching Netflix than making small talk at a holiday party. Netflix, baby, it’s my safe place. I pulled together a list of my favorite holiday movies streaming right now on Netflix. There is a little something for everyone; including a Kitzmiller Family Fan Favorite Snack and a cocktail from our fearless founder, Nanea.
For the whole family:
The Legend of Frosty The Snowman
This is NOT the Frosty we grew up with, people. The songs will be stuck in your head for days, but your kids will love it.
We watched this one last year for the first time. It was cute. A few adult jokes, but definitely for the kids. I say that knowing damn well I watched it not once, but twice after bedtime last year.
The Nightmare Before Christmas
This Tim Burton classic is beautifully done, but it can be a little frightening for younger kids. It also carries a five star rating from other Netflix viewers.
Nothing But Laughs
Crude, crass, and Christmasy. Need I say anything more? Fine, one more: Lauren Graham.
This is a brand new special by the none other than Bill Murray! It is sure to be a can’t miss.
Ok, real talk. This movie is classified as a comedy. I felt it was more of a dark comedy. I loved it because any movie with Anna Kendrick is a winner in my book. It was definitely not rolling with jokes though.
For the Romantics
Love Actually has been getting a lot of heat lately in my feminist circles. Claims that it is degrading leave me a little mystified, because if we are being honest, aren’t all romantic comedies a bit misogynistic? Watch it for yourself and decide. Also, if you’re a Walking Dead fan: Rick Grimes pre-zombies! You’re welcome.
I know, another throwback, but guys, Sandra Bullock is all cute and adorable. This movie is so sweet it makes my teeth hurt. Plus, watching it now, all you can think is: she never would have gotten away with that now, what with social media allowing family members to be all up in your business.
A true holiday classic, complete with singing and dancing. You will love this one, and I bet it will become a holiday tradition!
Our recommended snack
What is movie night without snacks? My favorite go to snack is, of course, popcorn. You will not find bags of microwave popcorn in my house. I love air popped. I have turned many of my friends onto it. It’s like MAGIC.
For this special holiday edition, I am going to holiday up my popcorn a bit.
Cranberry Popcorn
What you need:
- Popcorn kernels (I prefer white to yellow)
- Olive oil (light tasting) OR Popcorn oil
- Kosher salt
- Dried cranberries
In a large pot, coat the bottom with your oil and turn the burner on medium high heat.
Toss in a few tester kernels. Once they pop you are good to go. Serving size is up to you. I tend to go with Olivia Pope size, even when it’s just me. Edit: cover the pot or popcorny chaos will ensue!
While your popcorn is popping, you will need to watch and listen for the popping to slow down. It takes about the same amount of time as the microwave.
Once it’s done, pour it into a large mixing bowl and very lightly drizzle with your olive oil. Then, add a nice healthy dose of cranberries and kosher salt. Mix and serve!
Want to really step up this recipe?
Instead of pouring it directly into a bowl, lay it out on cookie sheets. Pour cranberries over the popcorn and salt. In a small pan, melt down white chocolate chips over medium heat.
Then, drizzle the white chocolate over the your cranberry popcorn mix. Let it set long enough for your chocolate to dry. Serve up in a large bowl!
Now, you are going to need something to wash all that deliciousness down with, and we’ve got you covered.
Cranberry Cinnamon Ginger Fizz
- 4 oz. cranberry juice
- 2 oz. ginger beer (This is important – ginger beer, not ginger ale. Ginger beer has a more intense flavor.)
- 1 ½ oz. Domaine de Canton ginger liqueur
- ½ oz. Fireball Whisky
- Cinnamon sugar for rimming the glass (optional)
Note: for junior household members, you can make a non-alcoholic version by omitting the ginger liqueur and whisky.
