My favorite post-Buffy Hellmouth show, Sleepy Hollow, was cancelled this year, and rightfully so. It’s been on its last legs since the second episode of third season. But thankfully, there is a new Hellmouth in town. Its name is Midnight, Texas and it premiers later this Summer.

The new series on NBC, Midnight, Texas, is based on the bestselling book series by Charlaine Harris. The town of Midnight is a haven for strange and otherworldly folks who don’t fit in anywhere else. These freaks just want to mind their own business and be left alone. Manfred, played by François Arnaud (my new crush), has the powerful – but often uncontrollable – power to see and speak with the dead.

On the advice from his dead grandmother, Manfred moves to Midnight, to escape his recent past. All his new neighbors are real friendly-like, because it’s Texas. Except for Olivia – she’ll take a while to warm up to the new guy. Maybe she’ll never warm up, she’s a prickly character – more like Faith than Buffy.

The plot and writing are refreshing. So many new supernatural dramas have been thinly veiled teen soap operas. The vampires, werewolves and witches in Midnight have adult problems. And a biker gang is the big bad guy. The episodes offered up for preview are gritty and walk the oh-so-fine line of belief and not taking oneself too seriously. This is probably due to its executive producers’ influence, Monica Owusu from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and David Janollari of Six Feet Under fame.

There is a real vampire, Lemuel, played by Peter Mensah of Sleepy Hollow and True Blood. He isn’t some sparkly, moody-broody Heathcliff, who doesn’t follow old school vampire rules. Lemuel’s a nice enough guy, but he doesn’t pine over the morality of his existence. This is Texas. Bella and Edward wouldn’t survive a day in Midnight, before Olivia – an assassin and girlfriend to Lemuel – knocked their front teeth out for being too precious.

The soundtrack in the first two episodes is on course to rival Supernatural. There’s no emo-indie teen bands. This is Texas – the cool part of Texas. The Black Keys and Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats are featured in the first few episodes.Another selling point for me is the cast chemistry. So many new shows take a season or more to have chemistry between characters, especially when you’re trying to convince half the characters that vampires and werewolves are real. This cast is melded together by the end of the first episode.

Sweatpants & Coffee will be recapping Midnight when it starts. Follow the link below to a previously released trailer. The release date from this trailer has changed. Midnight, Texas now premiers on NBC Monday, July 24, 2017 at 10pm.
