What Happened: Paul wakes up after a night with Miguel and finds his bike stolen and cameras in his face asking about his past in the war. I’d feel bad for him, but I find his angsty self-loathing every episode a little tiring. We get it writers, he hates himself for being attracted to men. We also found out he’s going to be a daddy! I need him to get his shit together and not marry that woman under the guise of being a big happy family if he’s gay.

Frank is back to his “old ways” of shaking people down for money, and his wife isn’t pleased that this puts Plan Baby on pause. He also tells Ray he should be done with this “cop stuff” and come work for him full time. Ray declines but I wonder how much longer Ray will be allowed to decline Frank’s offer.

Ani gets into some bullshit trouble at work after that officer she turned down tells IA about their inappropriate relationship. She’s put on leave from her department, but thankfully can still work the case. She also visits her father and we find out that Botoxed Therapist Rick Springfield and Mr. Mayor were buddies, and that the therapist may have had a hand in the Mayor’s first wife’s death thanks to Chessani’s daughter, Betty. We learn Chessani and Caspere were both interested in the same plots of contaminated land.

Ray sneaks to visit his son and gives him something to “remember him by.” Which sounds ominous, even though I know he’s just thinking about custody issues. It felt like foreshadowing that he wasn’t going to live much longer. Ray also warns Ani about the state investigation against Vinci and Chessani, telling her he has deep pockets and deeper connections, that the investigation is nothing more than a shakedown, and that she and Paul are expendable.

There’s a break in the case that leads the detectives to a pimp and drug dealer, Ledo Amarilla, who had one of his girls pawn Caspere’s watch. They track him down and there is a major shootout that leaves several cops and civilians dead and the three of them standing in the aftermath. It all felt like a set up to me. Right before they leave, Lieutenant Burris asks if she “really needs all that man power,” another detective asks Ani “Why don’t we just wait for them to exit?” and she says “Boss said take’em.” And back up conveniently arrives after the bad guys are all dead. I’m suspicious.

What I loved: I loved Ray trying to fix his relationship with his son. I love that he loves him as his son, despite the ugly truth. I also loved him in the car with Paul. It was some serious bro-bonding time.

That scene with Ani and her sister was sweet. I find Ani’s past fascinating.

What could’ve been better: Ani getting suspended and the entire IA investigation.

What I’m looking forward to: It appears as if the Caspere case is dead. Their suspect was just shot to death, so what happens now? The previews show Ray clean shaven. Are we jumping back in time or forward?
