10 Christmas Songs for People Who Are Sick of Christmas Music

By Charlotte W.F. Smith

Between having been raised with mostly classical Christmas music, having worked retail during the holidays, and easily getting annoyed with most anything played on the radio, my taste in Christmas music is…well, odd. I can’t stand the majority of Christmas music out there, so when I find some I really, truly enjoy, I have to share it. Here’s a short list of Christmas songs for when you’re sick of Christmas music.

  1. Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas – Coldplay (Because a good cover of this song is just needed on any Christmas playlist.)
  2. The Wexford Carol – Yo-Yo Ma & Alison Krauss (Because it’s one of my favorites, and it’s somehow haunting and joyous all at once.)
  3. Opera of the Bells – Destiny’s Child (because that last “dong” is just too killer.)
  4. Underneath the Christmas Lights – Gwen Stefani (Because it’s a good pace for cookie decorating or present wrapping).
  5. Puppies are Forever – Sia (Because there should be more puppies involved in Christmas songs, and this is also a song saying that puppies are forever, not just for Christmas, so love them forever and that makes my pupper loving heart happy.)
  6. Wish List – Neon Trees (Because I always picture a hilarious Christmas montage in my head when I hear this song.)
  7. Bogoroditsye dyevo – Harmonia Sacra & Peter Leech (Because it’s hands down my favorite Christmas song. It’s Rachmaninov’s arrangement of Ave Maria, and will bring me to tears every time.)
  8. Winter Song – Sarah Bareilles & Ingrid Michaelson (Because sometimes, Christmas means we miss people.)
  9. Coventry Carol – The Sixteen & Harry Christopher (Because growing up Episcopalian, it’s just not the Christmas service without this one.)
  10. All I Want For Christmas Is You – Against the Current (Because as much as I hate Mariah Carey’s voice, that is basically the most Christmassy song ever so I might as well find a cover I like.)

  1. I’d never heard Winter Song before. Thank you so much … it helps fill the lonely space we try to ignore when someone we love is gone.
