As a kid, my nephew was always sad that he couldn’t eat all of the things that other kids his age could eat. He had food sensitivities and severe food allergies, making it uncomfortable and potentially life-threatening if he ate certain foods. This was over 20 years ago and I truly wish there had been a children’s book like “I Can Eat This!” that I could have given to my nephew to ease his anxiety.
Through colorful pictures and rhyming text, the author walks the reader through the frustration, fear, and acceptance that are all a part of the journey of children with food allergies. There are notes for caregivers on symptoms and behaviors to watch for, and easy to understand explanations of things like an endoscopy, making them much less scary. The best part? The ten, tasty, allergy-friendly recipes at the end of the book that kids can learn to make for themselves, thus increasing their comfort level with nutritious foods and a better understanding of how foods nourish our bodies and our souls.
