The Disappearances by Emily Bain Murphy

“The Disappearances” is a debut novel from a San Francisco Bay Area author. Set in the 1940’s, this is an atmospheric, period piece.

Directions:  Aila is reeling from the recent death of her mother and the fact that she and her younger brother must move from their family home to live with a childhood friend of her mother’s in a small, rural community. Her anxiety is compounded by the fact that their father is headed off to war having been recently drafted. Aila and Miles have barely set foot in Sterling when they realize that this is a very unusual community steeped in secrets and weighed down by fear. Disappearances happen like clockwork and the folks in this small town think Aila’s mother is to blame. But is she to blame? Or is she just another victim of the curse as well.
