It’s stressful trying to find just the right gift for your friends or coworkers and having no idea what to get them. You want to find something that won’t break your bank, but you don’t want it to be a cheap piece of you know what. The struggle is so very real.

Last year, I shared with you some of my favorite mug projects. One of these projects was a nail polish watercolor mug. It was and still is the tits. However, I have recently discovered a way to upgrade this project.

There are a few issues with my nail polish mug. I can’t reheat it because…nail polish. I also have to hand wash it, and even doing it that way it has faded a bit. It is, however, one of my favorites so I really wanted to find a new way to get the watercolor look while also being able to actually wash and heat my mug.

This updated version of the original is the same price point and skill level. It’s the perfect last-minute gift for anyone on your list or yourself.

Supplies:

  • Dollar store white mugs
  • Pebeo Vitrail Glass Paint
  • Q-tips
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Ramekins or small bowls

You are going to start by making sure your mug is clean. Then, give it a quick wipe down with the rubbing alcohol.

Pour a little of the glass paint in a ramekin, splash it with a little alcohol and mix. Fill another ramekin with plain alcohol.

Taking your q-tip, dip it into your paint and just run it across your mug.

Once you have a nice design going that you are happy with, dip a new q-tip in the plain alcohol and dab it in a few places on your design. Once you have the paint in all the places you want, take your mug and run it  under water to get the watercolor effect. It was amazing. I didn’t put my faucet on too high and I used cold water.

You are going to want to let your mug dry for 24 hours.

Once dry, place your mug on a cookie sheet and put into your COLD oven. Preheat your oven to 325. Once it is preheated, “bake” your mugs for 40 mins. Then, turn off your oven and leave the mugs in there for another 30-40 minutes.

Now, here is the real win: if you wanted to, say, make a wine glass instead of a mug – you can totally do that! Just skip the oven part of the process and seal it with Modge-Podge. Washing will be “dishwasher safe,” but you are better off hand washing those.

You are now a DIY rock star!
