Packaging and Presentation:

Death Wish Beans

In keeping with their theme, Death Wish packaging is matte black with the signature skull and cross bones. I love it. It feels dangerous. The beans are dark brown and oily, the oil being a characteristic of darker roast coffees, which usually means less caffeinated than lighter roasts. However, there’s a “warning” label on the back letting you know that you are about have some of the “most highly caffeinated, bold coffee available,” and I’d have to agree that that’s no lie.

Taste Test:

The aroma from the bag itself isn’t particularly strong unless you put your nose in it. It does have a strong smell but the scent doesn’t carry far. I noticed that the first time I ground (I prefer whole beans) and brewed it. This one doesn’t come right out and hit you in the nose, but it definitely packs a punch.

From the first sip, what stood out right away was the flavor. I’m one of those people who does cream and sugar in my coffee but before I messed with the flavor, I wanted to taste it straight. Wow. All at once you taste a little chocolate, fruity, nutty shot that lingers for a moment then is gone. It’s a dark roast – don’t get me wrong, it’s bold and flavorful, but not bitter. The flavor doesn’t stick to your tongue so that every sip is slowly becoming the same. You get the “new” flavor of the coffee every time.

As for the “World’s Strongest Coffee” claim, I would have to say that it holds true. I’m not a world traveler, but I am a coffee lover. I try different coffees and coffee shops all the time looking for something different, and I generally look for flavor rather than caffeine. On a normal day, it takes me at least two cups of coffee to start to feel the effects. With Death Wish it only took the first HALF cup. It took me a moment to realize what was happening, honestly. It just sort of hit me that the “foggy” feeling had already subsided. I’m usually reaching for the coffee all day long. So, thinking this was some sort of sorcery, I made a half pot around 2:30 p.m. because that’s when I need a little pick me up and I’m not a big fan of energy drinks. It happened again. No joke, this stuff actually works. I feel like my eyes have been opened (no pun intended).

You will like this if:

You are a real caffeine lover. This coffee is NOT your night cap coffee. This is your “I was up too late being awesome and forgetting that it’s only Tuesday” kind of coffee. If you need a quick and lasting pick me up that’s delicious, this is the way to go.

Company:

Death Wish Coffee is the brain child of founder Mike Brown. After being constantly asked by customers at his coffee shop, Saratoga Coffee Traders in Saratoga Spring New York, for his strongest cup of coffee he realized that it didn’t exist. So, he set out with a small team to find the perfect blend of beans and roasting process for the strongest coffee in the world. I’d say they hit it out of the park.

All of their batches are small, so customers always get the best quality coffee, and the freshest, as quickly as possible. It takes about one week stateside to receive your order and around 2-3 weeks if you are international. All of their beans are Certified Organic, USDA and International, as well as Fair Trade certified. There’s no shady business going on here.

Finally, I’d like to say that they have been nothing but a pleasure to work with. They were nothing if not professional, the shipping was quick, and the staff were delightful to talk to.

Deathwish Coffee Stoneware Mug

Stay tuned for Part 2, when we review their Barrel Brand coffee. They will be offering four flavors: Whiskey, Rye, Rum, and Wine.
