Hello. My name is Jess. I like animals, heavy metal, cooking, sports, and writing. I am short, chronically ill, near-sighted, and I have been diagnosed with generalized and social anxiety disorders (like a boss). That last little tidbit means that today was made for me: International Panic Day! Today, rather than internally scream and pretend to be okay, I can acknowledge my perpetual state of panic and invite you all to join me:

Admittedly, I think Cerberus would be one of the few things I’d be so fascinated by, I might forget to panic. Or, at least, forget to panic that hard.]

Some argue that today is meant to acknowledge that there are lots of reasons for people to panic and that we all need a day to relax, reflect, and maybe feel less alone in our worries, big and small. I mean, I guess you could use it for that. I, on the other hand, am going to take this opportunity to stop burdening myself with trying to maintain the appearance of relative fine-ness; which, now that I’m thinking about it, I am kind of observing it by relaxing… in this one realm anyway. Ahhhh, sweet, sweet freedom.

This is another one of those annual observances with a big ol’ question mark next to it. No one seems to know how it started, who started, or why. While it is almost definitely not it’s origin, I like to pretend that we just worried it into existence. Kind of like this, but—you know—broodier. There is no shortage of ways to observe this annual occasion, though. But, really, who among us really needs suggestions? Did you wonder if you locked the door when you left the house this morning? Congratulations on your successful celebration! Have you been overanalyzing something someone said to you and convinced yourself that they hate you? Well done! Are you one of those lucky sons of guns with relatively few worries and so, now, you’re panicking that you have nothing to panic over? Good job!—and also: maybe you do need some suggestions (cn: ableist slur).

So, my fellow anxiety-ridden worrywarts, here’s to us and our superhuman capacity for panic! As I leave you with some inspiration for your fretting, remember: you are not alone, you are loved, and there are resources, if you need them. Take care of yourselves!

And on a lighter note:

Rex is basically my Patronous.
