I love a good mystery and debut author, Nev March, does not disappoint. “Murder in Old Bombay” is set in 1892 India where Sherlock Holmes enthusiast, Captain Jim Agnihotri, is recuperating in a hospital when he reads about the mysterious deaths of two women who apparently jumped to their death in broad daylight. The widower of one of the women is certain that she did not commit suicide but was pushed to her death. He hires Agnihotri to solve the mystery and clear the family name. As he begins his investigation, Framji family secrets come to light and someone may have their own reasons for not wanting the deaths of these women to be pursued. Based on a true story and set against the backdrop of colonial India, this novel is sure to be a favorite of those who appreciate richly drawn characters, historical accuracy, and a puzzle to be solved.
Diwali, the Festival of Lights, begins this year on November 14. This is a time of celebration with the focus on the Goddess Lakshmi: the goddess of love, prosperity, and health. Exchanging gifts is often part of these festivities, so this year we’d like to be the ones to do the gift giving! We will be sending one lucky Sweatpants & Coffee follower a copy of Nev March’s “Murder in Old Bombay.” Just leave a comment on why you love a good mystery too and you’ll be in the drawing for the book. In the meantime, you can get into a festive mood with this recipe for Nankhatai, an eggless cookie texturally similar to a shortbread cookie and absolutely delicious any time of year.

I love a good mystery when it’s written with an element of humor. I really appreciate it when the author drops well-crafted clues so that the reader can either solve it too or be blown away by a surprise ending.
