National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day is celebrated annually on the third Friday in December and is an opportunity to break out your most over-the-top, blingy, sparkly, blindingly celebratory holiday sweaters and sweatshirts.  While such questionable fashion was once limited to humans, one can now find dogs, cats, and even guinea pigs sporting their own goofy holiday finery. Before the virtual fashion show of pets in their ugly holiday outfits commences, a couple of serious points should be made for those of you considering similar garments for your pets.

First, remember that any sweater, coat, onesie, etc. your pet wears must not hinder their ability to walk or move, should not cover their eyes or inhibit their ability to successfully toilet, and should be something that they (somewhat) happily are okay with wearing.  Forcing a pet to wear something they find uncomfortable can cause anxiety and thus be potentially dangerous. Animals wearing garments they hate are more likely to pick at said garments, potentially ingesting fabric, sequins, glitter, etc.  They are also more likely to display their frustration in aggressive ways. Finally, all pets should be supervised while wearing their fashionable seasonal ensembles to insure their safety and overall comfort. Thus, while your pet may be fine with the ugly sweater long enough to take your annual family holiday photo, they may not want to wear it the entire day!

So, without further ado, on with the not-so-fashionable show!

For those of you with cats and dogs, how about matching outfits?

And for those discerning dogs who like a bit of glam, how about this one?

While these two sweaters have hoods/hats, they don’t cover your dog’s eyes, so you should still be able to see their eyes rolling.

Don’t let anyone tell your dog that the pom-pom reindeer on this sweater makes his butt look big.

You shouldn’t let this cat’s expression deter you, this cropped sweater is all the rage this holiday season.

And finally, for the fashion-forward guinea pigs, why not just throw it all in and dress up as one of Santa’s elves?
