Thanks to our friends at 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, some of the Sweatpants & Coffee crew were treated to a wine/paint/movie night, to celebrate the home release of the Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn comedy Snatched.

Snatched is the story of the directionless Emily, played by Schumer and her devoted (and timid) mother, Linda, played by Hawn. After Emily is fired from her job and dumped by her boyfriend, she finds herself without a travel partner to her planned romantic trip to Ecuador. When all of her “friends” leave her high and dry, she decides to try to break her mother out of her shell and take her along. Unfortunately, early on in the trip they are, well, snatched, and the polar opposite pair have to work together and overcome their differences to escape their violent kidnappers and find their way back home.

If you love Amy Schumer and comedies with plenty of raunchy humor, you will love this movie. It is the perfect showcase for Schumer’s going-for-it willingness to not only make the joke but be the butt of it. It’s great to see Goldie Hawn back on screen and to watch Linda’s evolution from cat-doting shut-in who babies her children to a badass brave heart whose temper is worn thin. While the plot was far fetched and some of the humor too scatter-shot, there were laughs to be had, especially with supporting performances by Ike Barinholtz from The Mindy Project as Jeremy, Emily’s agoraphobic nerdy brother, and Wanda Sykes and Joan Cusack as platonic best friends with a colorful past who come to the pair’s rescue. Schumer and Hawn are a believable mother and daughter, complete with all the tension and love one expects in a close relationship like theirs. And again, the humor doesn’t hold back in its R rating—I wouldn’t want to watch this with my mom, per se, but with some girlfriends or my main squeeze? It’s a silly and escapist way to spend an hour and a half.

As for our paintings? Jessica took inspiration from the film and painted a scene that looked straight from the movie’s resort, and the rest of us went rogue, painting everything from a sunset inspired abstract wash, to a graphic interpretation of a flowering tree, to a stained glass window.

Snacks were eaten, Moscato was drunk, canvases were filled and laughter filled the air. All in all? A most excellent girls’ night in.
