We all have the power within ourselves to make this world a better place. It just seems the beliefs we created in our minds, such as fear of rejection, have restricted us from acting on it.
I’ve seen this in my adult friends. But one day while I was nannying, I realized that children on the playgrounds were preventing honest exchanges from happening as well.
And my heart broke. I knew I wanted to do something.
My two young charges and I decided that we were our own superheroes, capable of saving lives and transforming realities. We just forget our power sometimes.
We hit the streets with handmade artwork in hand. We observed the way people carry themselves, physically, emotionally, and socially. We talked about it together.
And then, the magic moment happened. We walked up to the strangers, handed them artwork we had made and said, “This is just my gift to you. I hope you like it.”
It was as if time stopped. The busy, angry-looking strangers lowered their shoulders. They slowed down and smiled.
The children cheered wildly. One of them turned to me and said, “We did it! We changed the world! Now for the next one!”
This was an example of the power behind an expression of kindness and appreciation. I knew it would be part of my life forever.
Today, I write “lovebomb” notes and hand them out in hopes that the person receiving one will welcome the message. If they don’t, I’m not worried. Perhaps it will be the first shift in their thinking. It might just remind them that we are all in this together.
