Summer means lazy weekends getting burnt, grilling every food possible outside, and weddings. Why everyone thinks it’s best to get married when it’s boiling hot outside is beyond me. Wedding dresses are heavy, makeup melts, perfectly-done hair becomes a sweaty, frizzy mess – it’s just counter-intuitive to a good time. But if you’re a human with friends, you’ve probably been invited to a wedding or other similar event that involves looking awesome. Have no fear, S&C is here with two makeup tutorials for you to play with in the heat of summer!

1) Naturally Beachy: Inspired by our own beach-loving goddess Nanea, I decided to make a look that was easy, natural, and could incorporate as many or as few steps as possible, depending on preference and skill.

– Moisturize – After cleansing and toning, get your face moisturized and happy. For a natural look like this, a moisturizing primer is perfect. Too Faced Hangover Primer  has coconut water and probiotics to keep skin clear, moisturized, and happy. A bean sized amount should do it.

– BB cream or cushion foundation – Natural means easy, thankfully! A pump of BB cream is a great option (and since it’s a moisturizer, primer, and foundation in one, you can use fewer products!), but I’ve been really enjoying cushion foundations recently. Also a Korean import like their BB cousins, cushion foundations basically have a pot of liquid foundation covered by a screen that’s applied with an included sponge. For more natural application (aka, in order to keep it from going cakey), dampen and squeeze out your sponge first. I really like Philosophy’s Take A Deep Breath Cushion Foundation. Here’s half my face all evened out with it (the left side), and half my face still sleepy.

Benefit’s Hoola Bronzer is basically everyone in Hollywood’s favorite bronzer, so naturally I was ALL ABOUT IT when I found out they made a beautifully buildable, easily blendable liquid. It will come out an ugly color straight out of the bottle. DO NOT WORRY. Simply make a softly blended line from the corner of your mouth to where your cheekbone meets your hairline, and smear a little along your hairline. Then blend. Blend, my beauty. Bleeeeend.

See? Easy line, easy to blend! Just for some definition. If you don’t feel okay doing this part or can’t find a bronzer you like, skip it!

– Next comes eyebrow pencils, and I’m an absolute sucker for Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Brow Wiz. An easy twist-up pencil on one side and a fantastic brush on the other, there is none better in my book. But go with whatever brow pencil you like most!

As for filling in those beauties, make it easy on yourself and follow a general rule: trace just inside your natural brow on top and on bottom, then blend with a spoolie brush to soften the hardness. One of these days I’ll do a full, legitimate tutorial on filling in brows. Today is not that day.

– Now for an all-over color to even out skin tone on the eyelid! BareMinerals makes fantastic cream eye shadows like this one (primer, shadow, BB, and I don’t even know what else all in one. SCORE.) Plus, these types of shadows are super easy to blend.

– Those peepers need contouring! Use a shadow that’s a shade or two darker than your bronzer. I’m a sucker for theBalm’s adorable packaging and awesome formulas, so I’m going with their lovely Balm Desert. Just do a quick blending of your crease for extra definition.

Ahh, now you have eyeballs again! If your crease looks funny, no worries. Just breathe in, breathe out, and blend. There is no such thing as too much blending with this.

– Liner makes eyes pop, but we don’t want a harsh line on this natural look. Solution? Use a shadow! I love using a brown that’s a little darker than my natural hair color, so gauge yourself on going a touch darker than your hair if possible. If not, no worries. I’m a sucker for the Semi Sweet Chocolate Bar Palette from Too Faced because it ACTUALLY SMELLS LIKE CHOCOLATE (eeee!!!), thanks to cocoa powder as an ingredient. “Truffled” is my favorite for this.

Take a soft powder liner brush and make a soft, slightly smudgy line along your upper and lower lashline. Be cautious on the lower lashline so it doesn’t venture into “hungover eyeliner” territory.

– Do a single coat (or two, no judging here) of your favorite everyday mascara. When in doubt, Maybelline Great Lash is a classic that’s been around since the 60’s for good reason.

– Time to get some color in those cheeks! Mally Beauty makes great cream blushes. For this, I used Mimosa. A tiny bit of this stuff will go a long way, so use sparingly! It’s easier to add than subtract!

Using just enough to very lightly coat each pointer finger, dab the apples of your cheeks, blending out toward your temple.

* One of my favorite lipsticks is actually a tinted lip treatment from Lipstick Queen. I won’t even lie, I bought it because it’s called Medieval, but I keep it because it gives a sheer wash of lovely rose color that just works.

And that’s it! I tested this on a 100 degree, 50% humidity day in South Carolina and had much success.

2) Glowing by Day: Korean makeup trends are all about getting your glow on. The dewiness has had this oily-skinned girl shying away, but I’ve found a happy medium that still keeps me glowing!

– Moisturize, obvi. For this I used a hydrating gel from Marcelle to keep everything light. I also like to do a little spritz of face mist for this look. I found this one by H2O Plus at ULTA during a rebrand sale and couldn’t resist.

pic6

– Use a brightening primer next. Most of these have a bit of sparkle, which is really pretty fun. BECCA’s brightening primer is smooth and makes you glow without looking like you raided Limited Too. Lightly go over with your favorite BB cream or sheer foundation.

pic7

– Pencil in those brows, baby! Personally, I don’t fill them in with powder for this look, but feel free to.

– Now it’s time to get some ~*shimmer*~! First, use a shimmery color that’s slightly darker than your skin tone to fill in your lid and crease. I like using this eye shadow crayon from Mally Beauty  since it doesn’t tug. Find a color that’s just a hair darker than your skin tone so you have definition.

To add some shine to the lid, I’m going back to my Too Faced Semi Sweet Chocolate Palette and patting Pink Sugar on my lid.

To finish it off, I’ll add some Tarte Smooth Operator Amazonian Clay Setting Powder (aaaand, now I have the song stuck in my head) right underneath my brows and in the inner corners of my eyes to make them pop without adding unnecessary shimmer.

pic8

– There’s a trend in Korea called “puppy liner.” Cat eye liner is sleek and sexy, but can accidentally make some eyes look smaller. To make their eyes appear larger, Korean girls will often bring the eyeliner down a touch on the side, almost like a puppy with big eyes that’s begging for treats. In an attempt to match my pup, I used Eyeko’s Fat Liquid Liner in Black.

I know, I know, I’ll never be as cute as my fluff pup. A girl can try, right?

pic9

– To brighten up my inner rims, I use Tarte’s Inner Rim liner in nude. I SWEAR this stuff makes me look more awake. If you’re not about that inner rim life, though, then no harm done.

pic10

– A pop of slightly volumizing mascara will finish your eyes off. This one from W3LL PEOPLE is actually healthy for your lashes!

– Remember the cushion foundation I talked about in the first tutorial? Philosophy also makes a CUSHION BLUSHER. It’s super easy to put on and blend. Just dab your finger on the screen over the blusher, then dab your finger on the apples of your cheeks.

* Now to REALLY GLOW. Take a favorite finely ground shimmer powder, whether it’s a body powder you love the smell of or a luminizing powder. I have this old powder from Fresh that smells divine and makes me feel heavenly that I use JUST FOR THIS. Take a fan brush, pick up some powder, and lightly dust your cheekbones, chin, the tip of your nose, and right between your brows.

* Lippie! Today I went for a fun but wearable pink. First I applied the Balm’s Stainiac, let that dry, then went over it with The Beauty Crop’s PB&J Lip Smoothie Stick in Guava Nice Day. To finish, I swept on Laura Mercier Lip Glacé in Tulip. Congrats, you’re now glowing!
