When most of us think of literary sisters, we think of the Bronte family – Charlotte, Emily, and Anne. I prefer to think of the Ephron sisters – Nora, Delia, Hallie, and Amy. Raised by a strong-willed, talented, alcoholic mother, the Ephron sisters are themselves a force to be reckoned with. While Nora is usually the Ephron that most people think of first, thanks in no small part to her work on such movies as Sleepless in Seattle and When Harry Met Sally, each of the Ephron sisters is a talented writer in her own right. So, in celebration of sisters, here are my favorite reads from the women in the Ephron family.  There should be something on this list to delight each of your female siblings as well!

While I have read everything that Nora Ephron wrote before her untimely death in 2012, my favorite is still The Most of Nora Ephron, a curated collection of her funniest, most poignant, heart-wrenching, and thought provoking essays, blogs, and stories gathered together in a book much too big to carry in your handbag, thanks in no small part to the fact that you will also need a big box of tissues as well.

Sister Mother Husband Dog, Etc., by Delia Ephron is another beautiful collection, this one even includes a tribute to her older sister, Nora. It’s really hard for me to pick which essay in this collection I love the most, but her hilarious and oh-so-true take on dog ownership still makes me laugh every time.

You’ll Never Know, Dear, by Hallie Ephron is a standout in my favorite genre, psychological suspense. Forty years ago, Janey went missing from her yard, along with her handmade porcelain doll. Her family has never stopped looking for her and her sister continues to be haunted by guilt for leaving Janey unsupervised. The return of the doll sets a series of events in motion, dredging up family secrets that may better be left alone.

Loose Diamonds…and Other Things I’ve Lost (and Found) Along the Way, by Amy Ephron is an entertaining and insightful collection of essays on all things female, perfect for fans of Sex And The City and the writings of Lena Dunham and Amy Sedaris.
