If you’re a woman looking for quick read packed with information about how to survive an adventure in the great outdoors, look no further. A Woman’s Guide to the Wild: Your Complete Outdoor Handbook by Ruby McConnell is a great read that walks you through each step – from how to determine where to go, packing tips, setting up camp, campfire safety, how to handle lady issues, how to handle the occasional woodland creature (big and small), meals (recipes included), first aid, managing weather conditions and how to navigate your area.  She even offers tips on how to make the outdoor experience enjoyable for everyone, no matter what your age. The detail of descriptions (some accompanied by illustrations) not only tell you about what she’s describing but also show you, so you know exactly what to look for. They were incredibly helpful for this reader.  McConnell includes special tips from other outdoor experts as well as a wealth of information on organizations and wilderness agencies, non-profits and advocacy groups.  The author also provides short summary notes on each chapter at the end of the book for the reader’s reference.

McConnell clearly has a passion for the outdoors that shows in the level of detail she has poured into the writing of this book.  Her extensive experience with the outdoors shines though. Her ability to weave in personal anecdotes and humor not only helps you better understand the importance of respecting nature but does it in a way that is not dry, preachy or threatening. This should be required reading for those who want to learn the best practices for an enjoyable experience in the great outdoors.

A Woman’s Guide to the Wild: Your Complete Outdoor Handbook was clear, concise and a quick easy read that covers all of your questions, even some you may not have thought to ask.  It was a pleasant surprise to find that some of the advice she offers can be easily translated into other areas of your life. As a youth I would spend my summers camping in the Yosemite area.  As an adult, I got away from that and, by reading this guide, I’m inspired to unplug and reconnect with nature. New or seasoned hikers, backpackers and outdoor enthusiasts will find McConnell’s guide to be the go to book when it comes to wanting to know anything and everything about how to have a safe, enjoyable and prepared outdoor experience.
