In fact, if you follow these 7 simple steps, you will be able to kick off your shoes and relax while creating a peace of mind that your home is full of wellness.

 

What would a home be without its sense of safety and wellbeing? A house is more than a mere building — it’s your safe haven that provides you with shelter and comfort whenever you need it most.

Unfortunately, even homes can leave you at risk of illness, injury, and exposed to potentially harmful chemicals that may significantly impact your family’s overall health. But while everyone’s living arrangements are different and you can’t shield your family against elements beyond your control, there are a few simple tips you can keep in mind to enhance the greater health of your home.

Kick off your shoes and relax — follow these 7 simple steps to help give you the added peace of mind of a home full of healthier living.

1.Go Green

Pesticides create an atmosphere overflowing with toxins and potentially dangerous and lethal effects. Certain chemicals can cause injury and create a hazardous environment, too. While keeping your house clean and flawless is one of your top priorities in maintaining a healthy and organized space, make sure you opt for a natural alternative whenever cleaning is necessary.

Replace hazardous products oozing with chemicals with a batch of green products you can use with the added comfort of safe usage instead. Green products keep your house in top shape and protect your children from unwanted harm, too.

2. Make Handwashing a Priority — Even Outside of Flu Season

You may be extra leery of germs and bacteria during the cold winter season when illnesses such the flu begin to strike, but it’s also important to advocate frequent hand-washing continuously through the year.

Be sure to include a container of soap on top of every kitchen and bathroom counter within easy reach. Teach children the importance of maintaining cleanliness throughout the day and transform hand washing into a fun activity with soap containers in their favorite colors and shapes.

Skip antibacterial soap for ordinary washing soaps and warm water instead. Antibacterial soaps can have potentially harmful effects on your family’s overall health, so it’s okay to skip the added price tag of a solvent that claims added benefits by purchasing a basic cleaning soap instead.

3. Keep a Vacuum Handy

If you find yourself suffering through a never ending cold or an aggravate case of asthma, your home may be coated in dust mites that are causing these unwanted symptoms and distress.

Use a microfiber cloth or slightly dampened mop to clean hard surfaces daily. Remember to vacuum any carpeted area at least twice a week to prevent the dust from accumulating in your home, too. It’s essential to wipe dust off of hard to reach surfaces where children and pets may crawl into throughout the day.

4. Substitute Plastic With Glass

Did you know that the toxic coatings on BPA containers and bottles can seep into foods and beverages affecting your family’s overall health in the process? Although it may seem like the freshness proclaimed on the outside of your water bottle or canned beans makes them a safe thirst-quencher or snack, consider foregoing any products packed into metal cans or plastic containers for a healthier alternative instead.

Cut back on your use of plastic water bottles and canned foods whenever possible and opt for glass, stainless steel, or porcelain containers for added health protection. Reusable jars and containers considerably reduce your carbon footprint as well by cutting the need for one-time use plastics out entirely.

5. Prioritize Lead Safety

Make your home healthier by reducing the risk of lead contaminants and exposure in your living space. While residents of older homes are most susceptible to the risk of lead poisoning through lead-based paint, lead is also found in everyday soil, plumbing fixtures and even decorative accessories that may pose potential harm.

To prevent this hazardous material from finding its way into your home, remove your shoes before entering your house to ensure outside contaminants stay outdoors. Check the product labels of toys, art pieces, and general home accessories scattered throughout your house. A little precautionary measure and knowledge on the chemicals in your home can prevent potentially dangerous materials such as lead from creating an issue.

6. Organize Your Home

One of the simplest ways to help maintain a healthy home is to ensure everything is in its rightful place by prioritizing a sense of orderly space.

Choose one room at a time to tackle first to break your job down into smaller and more manageable tasks. Don’t forget to organize your garage by donating and disposing of unnecessary belongings that fail to add further value to your everyday life.

By decluttering your living space, you remove potential hiding places where harmful bugs and rodents make be tempted to stay. You’ll also cut back on valuable time by knowing exactly where your goods are when you need them, too.

7. Repair Anything Broken

Remember that gap under the door you’ve meant to fix since last Christmas? Now’s the perfect time to make all of your home’s necessary adjustments and repairs.
