From the moment you’re born, you’re given the perfect accessory: your birthstone. Each month has its own sparkling gem that signifies those born on that page of the calendar, and there’s no doubt that you wear yours with pride.

Aside from the usual earring sets and pendant necklaces, though, there are so many ways to wear your birthstone that are as unique as you are. Here are four examples of how you can accessorize with your month’s rock.

  1. Chandelier Earrings

    Emerald chandelier earrings.

You don’t have to buy a birthstone accessory that’s versatile enough to wear every day. Instead, you can make a serious statement out of your gem with a pair of extra-large, extra sparkly chandelier earrings. Just make sure to sweep your hair up so the earrings are visible, and always wear them solo: a statement earring with a statement necklace ends up being a bit much.

For example, May’s birthstone, emerald, is known for its deep green, regal hue. A pair of chandelier earrings with emerald or emerald-hued stones would frame your face with just the right amount of color and glam without being too overpowering.

  1. A unique ruby cocktail ring.

When it comes to rings, the diamond ones tend to get the most attention. But you can make a huge statement with a shiny birthstone ring, especially if yours is a brighter color amongst the other months.

There’s perhaps no better example than the fire-hot ruby gemstone. The color is so eye-catchingly fiery that it’s said to represent the undying fire of true love. It also makes the perfect centerpiece of a cocktail ring that you can dress up with a dress and heels on date night or wear with sleek cigarette jeans and a simple tee — your choice.

  1. Cuff Bracelet

    A gorgeous amethyst cuff.

Again, the tennis bracelet gets all of the attention, thanks to its glittering diamonds. But you can make a wrist-based statement with a cuff bracelet brightened by your very own birthstone. Cuffs can be worn halfway up your arm, too, if you’re looking for a bit more of a modern look with your jewelry. Otherwise, wearing it around your wrist makes it more timeless, just like the stones that make it sparkle.

A night out calls for a little extra jewelry, and the cuff bracelet is the perfect accessory to just about anything you’d slip on for dinner, drinks or dancing. If you were born in February, be sure the cuff you wear has a touch of amethyst in it: in ancient Rome, it was believed to have the power to fight drunkenness so its wearers could drink more wine without feeling its effects. (This has not been proven to be scientifically correct, though…)

  1. A simple but beautiful multi-strand pearl choker.

    Choker

Like a cuff, a bejeweled choker is often a simple metallic semi-circle with stone or gem finials. Chokers are a trendy accessory at the moment, but you can make it your own by personalizing your necklace with your birthstone.

Because chokers are less timeless than some other pieces of jewelry, you probably don’t want to spend big bucks on a real stone-and-metal one. In other words, those born in the months of April or June are lucky: it’s easy to find faux versions of their respective birthstones, diamond and pearl. If you keep searching, though, you might find others with a less expensive version of your own hue until it’s time for a new trendy piece of jewelry to emerge.

At the end of the day, it’s up to you how to wear your birthstone. Just like the gem itself, the way you wear it will be a representation of who you are. When it comes to accessorizing, there’s nothing more important than that.
