Netflix likes to do this thing (which I think is kinda awesome) where front and center on the main page are all the new films and shows that have arrived.  And with a few downward scrolls, you’ll find a list of even more new things to watch!

What Netflix doesn’t like to do is provide a list of everything that’s leaving at some point in the imminent future.  So, here I am, providing you with a short list of titles I’d recommend you to watch before they’re gone, because let’s face it, you might never have the opportunity to see some of them again.

These titles are all leaving on July 1st, so, you now have an excuse to cancel any plans this week.

  1. Kate & Leopold

This is a rom-com fantasy film that connects two people in New York City who are separated by over a hundred years.  Kate (Meg Ryan) is a modern-day career-focused woman and Leopold (Hugh Jackman) is an 1870s inventor who inexplicably ends up in Kate’s world and her life.  The two must navigate their confusion for each other to ultimately discover that love can overcome any distance, even across time.

This film is really the last amazing feature Meg Ryan has done, which is why you should watch it.  It also has Hugh Jackman in it. Which is another reason you should watch it. What’s great about this film, and other late-90s through early ’00s rom-coms, is that most of the film is just entertaining for the sake of being entertainment. Put this film on and do some mundane task, like going through your email inbox or scrolling endlessly on your phone, and then have a great conversation with your coworkers the next day about how awesome Meg Ryan used to be and how much you miss her films.

  1. While You Were Sleeping

Lucy (Sandra Bullock) is a token collector in Chicago and is crushing hard on an attractive man Peter (Peter Gallagher) who rides the train every day.  After he is attacked on the train, she helps him get to the hospital where she accidentally claims to be his fiancé.  His family graciously takes her into their lives, and she ends up falling in love with someone else.

This is one of Sandra Bullock’s earliest lead roles.  Watch it and enjoy. Particularly, pay attention to all the awesome 90s details that will get you reminiscing about the good ol’ days.

  1. Futurama (Seasons 1-7)

A 90s pizza delivery boy named Philip ends up being frozen for a thousand years and is woken up in the future.  The show Futurama follows his adventures and mishaps while he tries to figure out the 31st century.  This is an episodic-style show, so you can sort of start watching it at any point without having missed anything.

Okay, so this is one of those weird adult cartoons on Fox that gets very weird. I can’t stress that enough. There are some really weird episodes, but it’s pretty good because those weird things makes you pay attention.  If you’ve had a stressful day/week/life, try putting this show on and letting your mind take a break from reality for a while.

  1. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

Lorelai Lee (Marilyn Monroe) is in love with men with money, and Dorothy Shaw (Jane Russell) is in love with men with good looks. The two are best friends.  In classic 1950s style, the women must work through their narrow-minded ideals to ultimately find love with the man that they want.

If you haven’t seen a Marilyn Monroe film, this is the one to watch because it has her jaw-dropping performance of “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend.”  It’s a very entertaining film, and it will only take an hour and a half of your time.

  1. The Last Samurai (July 3)

Following a harrowing experience in wars, U.S. Army Captain Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise) is hired to train the Imperial Japanese Army to end the final samurai rebellion.  After being taken in by the samurai, he eventually becomes compassionate towards them and learns their ways.  He then fights alongside the samurai, as they fight for honor in a newly modernized Japan.

These days, awesome action films are commonplace, and it’s hard to remember that in the past, epic films only had one or two releases every year. The Last Samurai is one of those incredible movies that you just have to watch at some point.  With modern understanding of social issues, we can recognize the problem of whitewashing Japanese culture and using a white man to tell other people’s stories. However, this film is still a staple in action filmography.

Happy watching!
