The team is going all Taco Bell (but hopefully with less stomach upset) by making a run for the US/Mexico border. Unfortunately, they are stopped by the second greatest wall on earth. Surrounded by Zs with Murphy’s zombie mind trick not working, almost no ammo, and with their backs literally against the wall, they’re saved by Escorpion, who sends out an army of Zeros to kill the Zs while the team ducks into a tunnel.
Once inside, and having Zero options, Warren accepts the offer to hand over Murphy to the Zero’s leader, La Reina De Los Muertos (that’s The Queen Of The Dead, for those of us who didn’t pay attention in Spanish class, or for those who took French because it sounded “romantic.”) She’s been tracking them cross-country and now they’ve delivered themselves to her door.
She has Doctor Kurian, who was last seen being hauled away by the Zeros in their cargo of z-weed in episode “Batch 47.” Kurian has been working on a cure, which he should be able to complete now that he’s got Murphy and his magical blood.
However, what Kurian hasn’t been telling the Zeros is that he sees humanity as a lost cause and Murphy’s kind as the future, so he takes Murphy to his lab where they discuss what he’s really been working on: a way to make new zombies more susceptible to Murphy’s mind control. Proving he’s not the only smooth criminal in the room, Murphy gets a test subject to imitate his Michael Jackson dance moves before the Z suddenly expires. Kurian admits the formula requires a few minor adjustments.
Meanwhile, the team has to pass the Zero’s initiation ritual, which seems to have been pulled straight from Clue (Against Humanity): Cage match – against zombies – in the dark. As Escorpion is giving the team this bad news, Vasquez identifies him as the Zero that killed his family, and you know that nothing is going to stop him from getting revenge. Ten seconds later, lights come up to a blood soaked team and a bunch of nullified Zs – the losers in this zero sum game.
The team is then cleaned up, dressed up and rearmed for the Day Of The Dead themed party La Reina is hosting in honor of Murphy’s arrival. Though to be fair, that’s every day in the ZA.
Telling Warren that the mission is now over, Vasquez goes to shoot Escorpion but Warren stops him.
Everyone thinks Vasquez was trying to kill La Reina and Escorpion drags him off for questioning. And by “questioning” we mean torture. Just as things are starting to go really badly for Vasquez, he’s hauled out and we cut back to the party, where Kurian has announced his cure for the zombie plague is complete. Needing a demonstration, Escorpion hauls in Vasquez to be the first test subject. Just as Vasquez is about to be injected we cut to…Continuara… Wait. What? Oh, that’s Spanish for To Be Continued. What’s the Spanish for GOD DAMN IT again?
Still Alive: Warren, Doc, 10K, Addy, Murphy (kinda), Vasquez ( for now )
10K’s Kill Count: Easily something over the 5075 reported in last week’s episode “Corporate Retreat”
What we loved:
The tension as Vasquez stalks Escorpion. You know things are going to go really badly really soon, and the way it was shot really added to that.
Escorpion shooting the ventriloquist, which lost zombie kill of the week on a technicality ( in that there were no zombies harmed )
10K’s bug eyed reaction to his makeover.
Warren wiping off her post-makeover lipstick, the first chance she got.
The fact that even the Z-whacker got a makeover.
Escorpion’s reference to “Those rich bastards in Zona.”. Zona was referenced in “Rozwell” as the home of the technology recovery team.
After the zombie cage match, one of the Zs the team killed is hanging from the ceiling.
What bugged us:
La Reina credits Warren with delivering Murphy, like Warren has been working for La Reina, or was that just a confusing phrasing of circumstance?
Doc’s made over beard. Gaahhhh!
What we didn’t see coming:
That this was a two-part episode. We suppose we should have kept track of the time.
Quote worthy lines:
Warren: “If you’re the zombie messiah, now is the time for a miracle.”
Escorpion: “We’ve been tracking you for a while. Every time there’s some crazy bullshit going on, it’s you people. It’s not hard to follow you. What’s hard is guessing what you’re going to do next.”
La Reina: “But something tells me, a smart woman like you, a team that has traveled thousands of miles across the country, across a border, can make weapons out of just about anything, huh?”
Warren, before the zombie cage match: “All right people. Let’s win.”
10K, post makeover: “I feel weird.”
Escorpion, after shooting the ventriloquist: “And no zombie mimes either. La Reina hates zombie mimes”
Doc, to 10K: “I don’t know kid. Sometimes the best women are the ones that terrify you.”
Zombie Kill Of The Week: Is taken by 10K, with this blink-and-you’ll miss it kill with a chain.
