Who is back on New Girl and why do we desperately want to see a stage production of a woodland animal musical? Also, Hannah’s parents return on Girls, someone gets engaged, and we learn what the new frontier of misogyny is. Spoilers abound as always, so proceed at your own risk.

New Girl, Season 4 Episode 18 – “Walk of Shame”

Tomi Wiley James

This episode is just fun over all. A bit of progression (Paul’s back! And he’s a clown! But why are they calling him Gunslinger?) but mostly just fun interaction between friends.

What I Loved:

This is such a great friendship episode. Nick makes this big speech at the beginning when Jess and CeCe get their hair blown out (“Essentially they create a problem, then charge you to fix it,” he says.), and the way Schmidt is watching Nick talk is the face of a longtime, beloved and amused friend. But then, of course, Schmidt has to steal the moment with his own take on the girls’ new “single, adventurous” hair:

And Bearclaw is back! He’s so adorably awkward and funny. He calls CeCe “Sessy,” which just cracks me up. And his invitation to a party which includes “twin architects” (how is that appealing, exactly?) is more than the girls can refuse, considering they just can’t waste those beautiful new blow outs. Which leads to the predicament: the Walk of Shame after Jess wakes up in Bearclaw’s bed and CeCe wakes up… well, we don’t know exactly who she woke up with, but apparently he’s the man and the legend.

I love how worried the girls are about Taylor Swift living in New York by herself. Those jokes alone gave me a few minutes (okay, maybe more than a few) of wondering about gentle Taylor myself.

But possibly most of all, I loved the musical reimagined by Jess, Bearclaw, Paul and, eventually May, who joins in with her cello (you know, for that classy touch). The entire episode is worth watching just for the last few minutes of their performance.

What Could Have Been Better:

I don’t know, I pretty much loved this episode. The only thing I can think of is the return of Paul – where’s that going? Because Jess is getting back with Nick and I refuse to think otherwise.

What I’m Looking Forward To:

I want that woodland animal musical to be produced and staged. I want more of that gay wolf’s struggle. #thestruggleisreal

Girls, Season 4 Episode 8 – “Tad & Loreen & Avi & Shanaz”

Shandle Blaha

What I Loved:

Seeing more of Hannah’s parents definitely gives me insight as to why she is the way she is. The neurosis run deep in those genes. Hannah’s mom talking to her Dad about his sexuality was awkward and hilarious. I am seriously a fan of teacher Hannah, except when she crosses the teacher/student boundary to get the “best frenulum” piercings and then flakes out. Shosh and Scott are the exact opposite of lamesauce, even if she does call her vagina slimy while the cast of The Good Wife is at the bar. Marnie and Desi getting engaged, I guess? I am just really not a fan of him.

What Could Have Been Better:

Ray still pining over fucking Marnie? Not cool, Ray, not cool.

What I’m Looking Forward To:

Hannah dealing with her father’s news. I anticipate a narcissistic meltdown.

Girls HBO Tad & Loreen & Avi & Shanaz

Best Lines:

“It’s not not about me Tad, it’s not not.” – Loreen to Tad

“I’m just trying to be not so attracted to drama. To lead a calmer life, as Mary J. Blige tells us to.” – Fran to Hannah

“I think you are exactly the person that I think you are. I think you’re not the person that you think you are. I think that’s where the confusion is.” – Fran to Hannah

“You can walk away, and I’m just going to leave you with this and percolate on it over the weekend, like your little coffee machine. You’re attracted to me, you’re intrigued by me, you think I am a wild horse and you want to tame me. I understand all of that, it’s the new frontier of misogyny; you take a woman who is in control of her life and then silence her. And I’m up for it. ” – Hannah to Fran

“Bitches be cray.” – Shosh to Scott
