I did these things. I was present. I kept him safe in all the ways I could (he would get SO angry at me when I insisted on meeting his friends' parents!), but when they reach a certain age, they are often making choices you know nothing about. I loved hard - I loved so hard, and I failed forward. I never gave up. But I lost my beautiful boy to a drug overdose last year anyway. I'm not a believer in guilt. But this one . . . the guilt is crushing. I should have been a better, more approachable mother. But he talked to me about girlfriend troubles, for heaven sakes - I thought we talked about the important stuff. But he made choices - bad, terrible choices - I knew nothing about until it was too late. And I lost him. He was 25.

Great article. Alzheimers.....it's a powerful foe. I myself have early onset Alzheimers, though I try to live "normal" for as long as I can, the questions of what is to come loom large in my head. This author is a warm, caring daughter God bless her in her journey as she tries to do what's best for her mother and her emotions are torn to shreads. Let's all work and pray for a cure.
